The chairwoman of parliament's Health Select Committee is welcoming Phillida Bunkle's resignation from its inquiry into Northland gynaecologist Graham Parry.

The committee faced complaints from Parry's lawyer that Bunkle was in breach of Standing Orders which require a member who shows apparent bias over an issue to remove themselves from consideration of it.

Expert advice said Bunkle's actions did not show the strong, personal bias needed to dismiss her.

Bunkle, who says she has been volunteering to leave the inquiry for some time, has resolved the issue by resigning. She will be replaced by fellow Alliance MP, Liz Gordon.

Chairwoman Judy Keall says that helps the inquiry's credibility and means it can now focus entirely on the issues.

Keall says the inquiry hopes to complete its hearings next month and report early in the new year.
