A Green Party MP's member's bill proposing to dump youth pay rates has received a boost with the government agreeing to support it to select committee stage.

Sue Bradford's bill is due to have its first reading in parliament next Wednesday.

She says she is pleased the government sees the need for it to be debated.

Labour Minister Ruth Dyson says while they support the bill going to select committee, the government has made no commitment of support for later stages.

The youth pay rate for 16- and 17-year-olds is $7.60 an hour and for 18-year-olds is $9.50.
