Last year's finalist Shinobu Asagoe became the first seed to be knocked out of the ASB Classic on Tuesday after losing to Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 6-0 3-6 6-2 on Court 4.

The Spaniard raced through the first set with little resistance but went down in the second as Asagoe, the seventh seed and world number 35, flexed her muscles.

But the Japanese player lost the plot in the deciding set, getting frustrated at the umpiring and her own shot selection.

No problems for eighth seed Vera Zvonareva, who eased into the second round with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Argentine Paola Suarez.

The Russian was leading 6-2 4-2 on Monday before the rain fell in Auckland and wrapped up the match quickly on Tuesday.

She will now face former ASB Classic finalist Yoon jeong Cho, who caused a small upset knocking out talented youngster Shahar Peer 7-6 (6-0) 6-4 on Court 6.

The match was started on Monday but feel victim to the weather with Cho a set and 2-0 up.

However the task was too much for the Israeli, who reached the last eight last year, and the 2003 finalist from Korea raced into the second round.

Another match held over from Monday saw regular Auckland visitor Kristina Brandi ease into round two.

The Puerto Rican brushed aside the challenge of Colombian Catalina Castano 7-5 6-1 on Court 4.

Brandi will now face Sanchez Lorenzo.

Laura Granville won the first of the days all-American battles.

She won a see-saw battle against qualifier Shanay Perry 6-3 1-6 6-3. Granville had raced into a 5-0 lead before a mini-comeback from Perry to 5-3. Granville held on for the set but was found wanting in the second, however she held her game in the decider to score a second round match against sixth seed Marion Bartoli.

Jill Craybas defeated Ashley Harkleroad 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-4) in the other US battle.

The second round will have one qualifier after Israeli Tzipora Obziler downed American Jamea Jackson 6-3 6-2 to set up a clash with defending champion Katarina Srebotnik.
