Nelson coroner Ian Smith says parliament should re-open the euthanasia debate after hearing how a prominent campaigner carefully planned his own death.

Ralph Vincent, 84, committed suicide in his campervan in April leaving notes in which he called himself a "right to die believer."

He left a note to police saying he was a profound believer in the right to choose the time of his demise and also left notes for his two children and close friends.

Vincent was a former president of the now disbanded Nelson Voluntary Euthanasia Society.

An earlier inquest found his terminally ill wife Vicky, also a Society member, had committed suicide three years ago. Police investigating the matter found insufficient evidence to charge Vincent with assisting her death.

Smith says the whole question of euthanasia is not going away and it should be addressed.
