Apple has unveiled a version of the iPod that plays video.

The upgraded original white iPod will be available in the US next week and crams more storage and a bigger screen into a thinner package.

Though still mainly a music player, it will have 30 or 60 GB of storage and will be available in two colours - black and white.

Apple boss Steve Jobs says the company has sold more than 28 million iPods since the gadget was launched in 2001.

Jobs says Apple sold more than one million iPod Nanos in the first 17 days they were available.

The video-playing iPod has a 6.35cm colour screen that is 320 by 240 pixels in size. Jobs says the 30 GB iPod should be able to store 75 hours of video, and the 60 GB version should be able to store 150 hours.

Both are thinner than the existing 20 GB iPod.

Apple plans to make more than 2,000 music videos available and has also set up a deal with ABC television company to let Americans purchase episodes of shows for $US1.99 the day after broadcast.
