The National Party has received a boost from its tax policy with the latest One News Colmar Brunton poll showing the gap between National and Labour closing to just three points.
In the first full poll conducted since National announced its tax cuts on Monday, National has more than halved Labour's lead.
Labour has slipped two points to 43, while National picked up three points to hit 40 narrowing the eight point gap from last week's poll to just three points.
The Greens continue their climb up a further point to seven this poll.
New Zealand First is down one to five, Act remains on two, while the Maori Party and United Future see no change on one.
On the current figures Labour would have 53 seats in the house. Add on Jim Anderton's seat, which is pledged to Labour, and the Greens eight seats on current polling and a Labour-led coalition would have a majority 62 seats
National would have 48 seats on its own and even with seven from New Zealand First, one from the Maori Party and one from United Future, they would still be short of the 61 required to form a majority coalition.
In the preferred prime minister stakes, both Clark and Brash have got a lift. Clark is up two to 45, while Brash is up six points to 27.
Winston Peters is down one to seven as preferred prime minister.
