A building boom in rural areas of South Auckland is causing long delays for people needing consents.
Franklin District Council says it's taking about 8 weeks to process building consents - twice as long as it should.
The council's chief executive Phillippa Wilson says building inspectors are dealing with an unprecedented workload.
She says more than 500 new houses a year are being built in the district, and recent changes to building regulations have compounded the problem.
Ms Wilson acknowledges the delays are frustrating.
The council is advertising for two more building inspectors and an extra administrator to help ease the situation.
