A new survey of parents has found that almost two-thirds of those who took part, consider smacking to be the least effective way to guide and discipline children.
More than 1300 readers of a free parenting magazine took part in the survey which was carried out on behalf of the Littlies Lobby.
Ninety six percent said praising and encouraging good behaviour was the most effective way to get children to behave well.
The survey comes as Green MP Sue Bradford's anti-smacking bill will be debated in parliament on Wednesday.
It would repeal Section 59 of the Crimes Act which allows parents to use reasonable force against their children.
