The battle for the elderly vote is becoming increasingly bitter, with National writing to Grey Power and accusing it of nailing its colours to one of its potential coalition partners New Zealand First.

Both Grey Power and New Zealand First reject the claim.

In the letter, National's leader Don Brash says he regrets Grey Power is overtly favouring New Zealand First and warns his party won't be bullied into policies which are grossly irresponsible.

New Zealand First has promised to boost superannuation payments, at a cost of around $700 million.

In a written reply to Brash Grey Power President Graham Stairmand denies it has told any members who to vote for.

At a Grey Power meeting on Friday New Zealand First leader Winston Peters said his party has not done any backroom deals with Grey Power.

"Yes we have spoken to members of Grey Power's executive in the past - in fact from the day Grey Power started. But they have always acted with the utmost propriety and in a totally neutral manner. They have always informed us that they are meeting with all political parties and the relevant spokespeople," said Peters.

He said Brash's claim that Grey Power is striking deals with New Zealand First is an ignorant insult which Grey Power members should not have to tolerate.
