People in Feilding say they are shocked that a double homicide could happen in their town and some say they are improving their personal security.

Police have still not released the names of the elderly pair whose bodies were found early on Sunday morning.

Though they haven't been officially identified the victims are known to the local community as Ted Fergusson and Margaret Waldin, both aged about 75.

Dozens of police have spent the day going door to door in Feilding as they investigate the killings.

Police say they have no idea of the motive for the killings, but they describe it as a heinous crime.

"All I can tell you at this time is that our initial view of the scene shows us that the two elderly people had met a violent death," Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan says.

Police have been reviewing footage from security cameras sited near the flats where the couple were found.

Locals say the attacks have left them distressed and worried for their own safety and many in the small Manawatu town are still unable to comprehend what has happened.

"My step dad and aunty margaret used to get on good with everybody around this town. They never had qualms or arguments or anything," Ted Fergusson's step daughter Rosemary Blake told One News.

Friends have described Fergusson as a real gentleman and Margaret Waldin as a fun loving bubbly person.

Manawatu Mayor Ian McKelvie says the killing of the pair is a blow to the community. Locals are ow concerned the elderly are becoming a target for criminals.

"It's getting too much of it lately around the country. Especially when it comes to the older people too," local resident Mort Kerr says.

For many in the town the deaths are bringing back memories of the killing of 83-year-old Marton pensioner Mona Morris, whose killer is still unknown.
