German federal prosecutors are investigating a known suspect with Arab links in relation to the terror attacks in the United States but have not yet detained the person.

Chief Prosecutor Kay Nehm said prosecutors were also investigating members of an extremist Islamic group active in Hamburg since the start of the year, but said they had found no links connecting the suspects with Saudi-born exile Osama bin Laden, who US officials have said was almost certainly behind the attacks.

He is said to have denied involvement.

Nehm said the goal of the group had apparently been to carry out, in coordination with other groups, acts of violence and the destruction of symbolic buildings in the United States.

Police in Hamburg earlier detained one man in connection with the US attacks and searched several apartments in the northern city.

The prosecutors also said three students of electronics from Hamburg were on the passenger lists of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Hamburg police had earlier said that two suspects had been enrolled at a technical college in Hamburg.
