Big crowds are expected north of Kaitaia for the unveiling of the country's newest war memorial, at Waipapakauri.
Far North people have built the memorial to honour the servicemen and women who trained at the Waipapakauri air base during World War Two.
Mille Srhoj, who chaired the organising committee, says for several years the aerodrome was New Zealand's frontline defence against a feared attack from the north.
He says at its peak, Waipapakauri was the base for six hundred defence personnel and regular air patrols of the Pacific.
Srhoj says many people who served there are expected at the unveiling this afternoon, by the Veterans' Affairs Minister, George Hawkins
