The Mayor of Hamilton wants the Auckland to Hamilton passenger train service subsidised by central government - but is ruling out any local contribution.

The service, called the Waikato Connection faces the axe when Australian company, West Coast Railway takes over passenger services from Tranzrail.

Hamilton Mayor, Russ Rimmington and other local body leaders met with the Minister of Transport in Hamilton on Friday to discuss the issue.

Rimmington says he's very reluctant to commit money to the service because his council is fully committed to local projects.

However, Rimmington says central government should back up its rhetoric on alternative forms of public transport and subsidise the service through Transfund.
