The Central Otago town of Alexandra is normally one of the sunniest in the country, but it has been shrouded in fog almost every day since late last month.

The town is in the grips of a freezing hoar frost that stretches back weeks, and while locals love the look, they are longing for the sun.

Accidents are four times the winter norm with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of vehicles written off, and in the fog's gloom car lights are on at midday.

Alexandra's riverside location, the sun's low angle and a lack of wind all contribute to creating the hoar frost.
