Manly is the outright leader on the National Rugby League ladder after producing an heroic defensive performance in beating Melbourne 25-18 at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

Sea Eagles captain Michael Monaghan kicked a 30 metre field goal with just over two minutes remaining to ensure his side maintained its undefeated start to the season, at the same time ending the Storm's perfect record.

The Storm made a great start on Sunday when Steve Bell crossed after only two minutes but Manly had the better of the first half thanks to a lopsided penalty count and some scrambling defence on their own line, taking an 18-12 lead into the break.

It was 18-all in the 62nd minute when Billy Slater used his blinding pace to get to a Matt Orford kick.

But the deadlock only lasted three minutes with Manly fullback Brett Stewart crossing to give his side a six-point edge.

Monaghan then nailed his second field goal attempt to send the 15,000 plus Manly supporters into raptures.

Canberra can join Manly in top spot on Monday if it beats South Sydney at Aussie Stadium.
