Controversial historian David Irving says he will attempt to board an aircraft to New Zealand this week, despite the government refusing him permission to visit.

Immigration officials announced in July that Irving, who has been labelled a holocaust denier, would be refused permission to enter New Zealand under the Immigration Act  because he was deported from Canada in 1992.

Irving says he will attempt to check in for a Qantas flight from Los Angeles.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael Cullen says he is likely to be stopped before he gets on the plane.
