The jury in the port picket manslaughter trial has heard evidence from a controversial witness.

The court was told that police had raised concerns about the testimony of a Dunedin engineer who was called as the first of four witnesses for the defence.

Phillip Seque was present when Christine Clarke was struck by the vehicle Powell was driving.

He said that prior to that the situation had got "quite physical".

The court heard that Seque's evidence would be critical to proving the defence case that Powell was acting in self defence.

But questioned by the Crown, Seque admitted he had not actually witnessed an assault.

The Crown chose not to put Seque on the stand and the court was told police had discounted him.

When he took the stand, Seque denied receiving any association with the accused.
