Despite weather forecasts saying Southland could expect more heavy snow on Thursday, the weather has held off in Gore, after an horrendous wintery Wednesday closed schools and roads in the south.

Gore police say the forecast snow has not eventuated, although there was rain earlier in the day.

MetService said in the eight hours from 0800 Friday morning, Southland could receive snow down to 200 metres.

On Wednesday snow closed State Highway One between Gore and Balclutha.

In the North Island, the desert road was also closed.

MetService says the North Island can look foward to warmer weather on Friday.
