Farmers say the rain which has fallen over the weekend has broken the drought in many parts of the South Island.

Rain has fallen in the drought-affected regions of South Canterbury, Nelson and Malborough.

The President of Marlborough Federated Farmers, David Dillon, says rain is still needed on the 6,000 hectare region around Seddon, which was devastated by fire in December.

However, he says the damp, overcast conditions throughout the rest of Marlborough are ideal for the land's rejuvenation.

Dillon says he would now like to see more showers over winter and snow on the mountains to build up the land's depleted water reserves.
