New Zealand fighter pilots whose jobs will be axed under cutbacks within the Air Force may have the option of joining their counterparts across the Tasman.

The Government is making dramatic changes to the defence forces, including the scrapping of the Skyhawk and Aermacchi training squadrons.

The Royal Australian Air Force has a shortage of combat pilots and reportedly is eager to recruit members of the Skyhawk squadron.

The squadron works alongside the Royal Australian Air Force at Nowra in New South Wales.

Commanding Officer Jason Easthope says while he is waiting to see what other job opportunities the Air Force will offer, his passion is flying fast jets.

He says joining the Royal Australian Air Force is an option he is seriously considering.
