The MetService has lifted a heavy rain warning for the eastern Bay of Plenty and Gisborne.

The area received more than 60mm of rain on Saturday night as a low swept across the North Island.

Major problems were reported in Rotorua on Saturday afternoon as torrential rain flooded roads and caused a landslip.

Civil Defence says a house damaged by the landslip will be inspected early on Sunday to see if it is safe for the residents to return.

The Civil Defence manager, Malcolm Breadmore, says the residents were evacuated from their home after the slip threatened the house's foundations.

However, police say there have been few problems overnight as the rain began to ease.

The MetService says the low is now over the top of the South Island, and in the past 24 hours up to 12mm of rain has fallen around drought-stricken Nelson.
