Civil Defence in Rotorua said torrential rain on Saturday caused a landslip forcing residents from their home, while further out of town a dam is threatening to overflow.

A heavy rain warning remains in place for the Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki, and the Gisborne ranges north of Tolaga Bay.

Rotorua Civil Defence manager Malcolm Breadmore says the Fire Service is inspecting the dam which is threatening to flood a hunting lodge.

He says there are no guests staying at the lodge.

A house in the city was hit by a land slip, while flood waters closed a number of roads which are now re-opened.

Breadmore says Civil Defence is expecting more flood problems during the night.
