There is outrage in Fiji at a senior official's accusations that Indo-Fijian journalists are destabilising the country and dividing indigenous Fijians.
The accusations have come from the permanent secretary to the President's Office, Colonel Jeremia Waqanisau, who says Indo-Fijian reporters are "pitting Fijians against Fijians."
Colonel Waqanisau says Fijians don't seem to understand the orchestrated campaign going on designed to further split the Fijian community, particularly by Fiji Television, which this week broadcast a controversial interview with the deposed president, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
Colonel Waqanisau's comments have been labelled offensive, insensitive and unworthy of the Office of the President.
The chief executive of Fiji Television, Ken Clark, says their job is to report what is going on and not take agendas to the nation.
He says the ethnic background of journalists has nothing to do with the jobs they do and to blame Indo-Fijian journalists is racist.
The publisher of Islands Business magazine, Robert Keith-Reid, says Colonel Waqanisau's comments are outrageous.
Keith-Reid says the destabilising figures in Fiji are a bunch of Fijian leaders who are making a very obvious and ugly grab for power.
Colonel Waqasnisau is downplaying his remarks, saying they were personal. He says the issue is best forgotten because continuing debate on it would be destabilising.
