The family of a New Zealand snowboarder killed in the French Alps say he was always safety conscious and knew the dangers of an avalanche.
But Trevor Hales was prepared to to take the risk for the sport he loved.
The 29-year-old from north of Auckland died on the slopes above Bourg Saint Maurice in south-east France.
Hales was crushed by an avalanche as he sped over the powder in search of adrenaline.
"I can just picture him doing his last run, just loving it, he would have been hooting it," his brother Steven said.
Trevor and his Norwegian wife Karianna had been in the Alps for about three months and it was his fourth season in the region.
And although he died in deep French snow, Trevor's thirst for adventure made him a regular among the waves on Auckland's west coast.
Friends say that after work he would race out and surf until dark, sleep in the van and then head back to the office.
