Dairy farmers are claiming the recent drought conditions have cost the economy up to $150 million.
The chairman of Dairy Farmers of New Zealand, Charlie Pedersen, says the current drought is a wake-up call for farmers and the Government to invest more money in artificial water sources.
Pederson says global warming means droughts will be more common in the future and dairy farming in New Zealand may depend on more dams being built to supply artificial irrigation systems.
Meanwhile the Met Service says rain over the Easter weekend has had little impact on drought conditions in the centre of the country.
It says there has only been 10 to 15 millimetres of rain in Wellington in the last few days and virtually no rain in Marlborough.
