Jennings loses defamation case

Published: 2:58PM Thursday April 05, 2001

ACT MP Owen Jennings says he is disappointed by a High Court ruling that he defamed a senior official of the New Zealand Wool Board.

The case related to remarks made by Jennings three years ago over the Board's sponsorship of a Barbarians' rugby tour of the United Kingdom.

Wool Board official Roger Buchanan brought the case after comments printed in the Independent newspaper.

Justice Heron ruled that the publication would undoubtedly have been distressing and alarming to Buchanan and awarded him $50,000 in damages, plus costs.

Jennings says he is examining the judgement and considering his options.
