Electoral officials say they cannot and should not decide if the Alliance MP Phillida Bunkle was validly enrolled in the Wellington Central electorate.

However they say she has not broken the law.

The Registrar of Electors for Wellington Central has found that Bunkle did not commit any offence under the Electoral Act by enrolling to vote in that seat.

However the Registrar, Raewynne Uren, says she also cannot say that Bunkle's enrolment was valid.

The inquiry was started after the Opposition raised questions about Bunkle's enrolment in a Wellington seat while she claimed an accommodation allowance on the basis of her home being outside Wellington.

Uren says the circumstances of Bunkle's enrolment were complex, involving highly subjective and subtle matters.

She says Bunkle has made both consistent and inconsistent statements about her enrolment and she cannot reach a conclusion about it.
