New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan ripped into his defence but took a share of the blame himself for their 31-27 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday.
The Jets (3-2) gave up 21 points to Miami (2-3) in the fourth quarter for their second straight defeat, including the winning touchdown by running back Ronnie Brown with six seconds left.
"It was a complete embarrassment by our defense and by me, obviously we need to prepare better," Ryan told reporters.
"I didn't have the defense prepared the way they should have been and I take full responsibility for that.
"I've never been involved in a game like that in my life. Our offense did tremendously and gave us every opportunity to win the game. At the end, I thought about using timeouts but I said, 'they are not scoring'. I was wrong," he added.
Miami quarterback Chad Henne, making just his second start, threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns.
"We made that quarterback look like Dan Marino," said Ryan, who as defensive co-ordinator for the Baltimore Ravens last season helped foil the Dolphins in the playoffs.
"He ... deserves credit. We have to do a better job at defending that long pass. I think it was just a horrendous day for our defence."
Miami coach Tony Sparano was impressed with the way Henne led the 13-play final drive that ended with Brown's winner.
"He handled it with poise. I thought he did a tremendous job managing the clock in a lot of situations at the end," he said.
Miami used four players in the quarterback role for the final drive. Running backs Ricky Williams and Brown took direct snaps along with back-up Pat White and Henne.
"It was a good job by the coaches, too. Dan Henning and the offensive staff did a nice job of mixing things up in the last couple of drives," Sparano said.
