Kiwi IndyCar driver Scott Dixon has failed to retain his Indy Car title after Dario Franchitti raced to victory in Miami on Sunday.

The caution-free race saw Target Chip Ganassi's Franchitti claim the series title for the second time in his career after he stole the lead from Australian Ryan Briscoe, who had the title in the bag with seven laps left before he was forced into a pit stop.

The 2008 champion Dixon, who finished third at the Homestead Miami Speedway, wound up second in the championship race, 11 points behind Franchitti.

Dixon has tried to remain humble in defeat.

He said it is a fantastic day for Team Target and he just came up short on fuel again.

While Scotsman Franchitti said:

"We were sticking with our strategy.

"I cannot believe it. What a year for this Target team; it's been so much fun. Scott and I raced each other hard all season and it came down to this."
