A proposal calling for the Waikato region to also become a super city has been put before a select committee in Auckland.
A local group, made up of former mayors, business and community leaders, is calling for a single Waikato council, backed up with local boards - in line with the proposed Auckland super city.
Former Hamilton Mayor Margaret Evans is part of the group calling for the change, saying their proposal is in line with the proposed Auckland super city
Evans says it would be possible to have everything in place for Waikato's super city by June next year, since reviews of the Local Government Act and Resource Management Act are already underway.
Their proposal would see one mayor and 14 councillors replace the current eight mayors, one chair, and 92 councillors across the region.
The 13 community boards would be expanded to at least 20.
They are also suggesting reforms for the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty be considered at the same time.
The group are putting their case to the Parliamentary Auckland
Governance Legislation Committee.

Our Community lost identity and resources in the Local government shake up in the mid '90s. Despite what was said at the time we lost our voice and funding for our local project, although the smaller neighbouring town did OK out of it. Our roads are a shambles and no-one seems to care. We DO NOT want to be lost in an even bigger bureaucratic eg trip - if anything we want our Borough back!
