Auckland Mayor John Banks is being pipped by his Manukau counterpart in a head-to-head battle to be super city mayor.

A poll by UMR Research has found that when just those two were compared, Manukau City Mayor Len Brown gained 35% support while Banks received 34%.

In another match-up, Banks with 35% was ahead of Auckland Regional Council chair Mike Lee on 18%.

Brown was stunned to learn he is a more popular choice than Banks, especially since he hasn't yet put his hat in the ring. He says he has been under pressure from the community to contemplate taking a shot at the mayoralty, but he is still talking to his family about it.

Brown says his community is looking for a mayor who can represent the entire region.
