WATCH THE TRAILER FOR SEPARATION CITY
Tom Scott is better know for drawing political life than
documenting his own which may be why his latest movie script cost
the veteran cartoonist 25 years of his life, and potentially a few
friends.
Separation City is a Kiwi film about men falling out of love for the first time.
"I've had women fall out of love with me and it's a devastating experience, absolutely devastating," says Scott.
The film is about Scott's experiences, and he admits he has used a few stories from his friends too.
"Some of them may recognise themselves..I've tried to disguise it...I mean Barry becomes Harry, Tim becomes Jim.
At least his friends will be pleased with the quality of the cast.
"I was really chuffed, we've got Rhona Mitra from Nip Tuck and Boston Legal...she's utterly gorgeous, we've got Thomas Kretschmann who was in The Pianist...and we've got Joel Edgerton who's a well-known Australian actor," Scott says.
Scott has been drawing political cartoons for a day job and contributing to other notable Kiwi film offerings, all the while quietly working on his script for 25 years.
"When I first started writing it, it was the second wave of feminism and a lot of women found this script deeply offensive, now what was offensive then people are amused by."
And he says even his octogenarian mum wasn't offended by his "saucy and naughty" work.
Separation City opens at local cinemas on August 6.
