State owned electricity generator Mighty River Power is seeking resource consent to build a large wind farm near Palmerston North.

The Turitea wind farm in the Tararua Ranges would be its first large scale wind operation.

It would bring the total number of wind turbines on the ranges to 380.

But nearby residents say the plan would completely change the character of the ranges.
