New Zealand Indy driver Scott Dixon has finished third in the Indy Car race at Watkins Glen in New York to move to the top of the overall standings.

Justin Wilson has won comfortably from Ryan Briscoe and Dixon.

Dixon is now 19 points ahead of Briscoe and Dario Franchitti after nine of the season's 17 races.

Dixon said the car was average but the team did a great job to get him on the podium - but just he couldn't match the pace of Wilson.

But the Kiwi says Wilson's victory is actually beneficial for him.

Dixon said it is better than having Briscoe win - in terms of the overall scheme of things.

Wilson's win for Dale Coyne Racing is the first by a team other than Chip Ganassi or Team Penske since the Detroit round last year.

It is also the first in 25 years of racing for team owner Dale Coyne.

Round 10 of the Indy Car series is in Toronto next weekend.
