Youthline is welcoming a computer game that could help young people combat depression.

Auckland University is launching a trial this week on a 3D fantasy game that involves shooting negative thoughts and learning how to manage moods.

Auckland University senior lecturer and child psychiatrist Sally Merry says the game has seven levels each linked to the core components used to treat depression in young people, called cognitive behavioural therapy.

Merry says it includes combating negative thoughts, solving problems, learning how to relax, accessing help when needed and resolving conflict.

She says young people have been involved in developing the game.

Youthline director Stephen Bell says technology is an important tool to reach young people in the 21st century because it's something they understand.

Bell is warning that any depression-fighting technology should complement supportive relationships not act as a replacement.
