Police in Auckland have charged a 37-year-old man with the manslaughter of a Korean woman who died during a religious ceremony last month.

The woman died at a Mount Roskill house where it is claimed members of a religious group were performing an exorcism to cast out demons they believed were possessing her.

Police have not released the victim's name because Korean police have so far been unable to contact her next of kin.

Taumaranui victim named

Taumaranui police have released the name of the woman who was found dead at a house in the central North Island town on Thursday morning.

She was Lauren Natasha Shepherd, 21, of Taumaranui.

Detective Sergeant Derek Webb says a postmortem is being carried out in New Plymouth to determine the exact cause of death.

He says a visual inspection of the body suggests the woman died of massive head injuries.
