Kayne Scott scored a second emphatic win in the fourth round of the BNT V8s Championship taking place in Timaru this weekend.
The Fujitsu Ford driver from Hamilton make it another start-to-finish victory, but had to fight off determined attacks from Angus Fogg in the LG Ford through the twisty parts of the South Canterbury circuit.
Fogg was not only trying to get past the very experienced Scott, but also had to defend his second position from defending champion John McIntyre in the Castrol Ford.
On the warm-up lap, the Ford of former truck racing champion Inky Tulloch experienced a mechanical failure and broke down on the side of the track.
The field followed the safety car around for two laps, with these two laps being deducted from the intended 16 lap total. V8 newcomer David Hopper requested to start from the back of the grid to keep clear of other competitors.
The 17-year-old Hobsonville driver was scheduled to start from 22nd.
The first corner of racing action was congested with Tim Edgell looking to get the worst of it, dropping from fifth to seventh as Scott, Fogg and McIntyre got a clean run.
The leading trio stretched a handy lead over Craig Baird and Andy Booth, while Andrew Anderson and Edgell battled for sixth, with Anderson dropping off the circuit and losing places to the chasing Fords of Eddie Bell and Michael Bristow.
Luke Youlden, Paul Pedersen and Andrew Porter all went through the pits for various mechanical repairs, which shuffled the field, while Andy Knight and Paul Manuell had a great battle for twelfth place - an interesting clash between one of this year's rookies and the longest-running competitor in the class in which Knight got the better of former champion Manuell.
As the race progressed, McIntyre looked close to getting past Fogg for several laps, the Nelson-based two-time V8s champion making repeated attempts to pass Fogg and lessen the points' deficit to the leading Scott.
Fogg closed on Scott several times, his Ford clearly having a handling advantage over Scott through the more twisting part of the circuit. But Scott held Fogg off to complete a stereotypical error-free race to take his fourth win of the season, more than any other driver from the eleven races completed so far this season.
This weekend's second race marks the mid-way point of the season, with eleven races now completed and ten still to run.
The BNT V8s contest their final race of the weekend - the reverse grid 20-lapper late on Sunday afternoon - before packing up and moving to Invercargill for the fifth round of the 2008-09 BNT V8s Championship over the weekend of 16-18 January.
