Why is Ricky Gervais' dentist smiling?
by tvnz.co.nz's Darren Bevan

Ricky Gervais' first starring role has seen them checking into another kind of Office.

His turn as cranky dentist Bertram Pincus in Ghost Town easily beat Rocknrolla , the latest from Guy Ritchie to the top of the box office this weekend.

And it was a clear victory to Ricky - $40,000 more dollars were handed over at the box office to see the romantic comedy over the shaggy dog, seedy criminal underworld story of Rocknrolla .

Mind you, it was always going to be a close fight with 4 big films being released.

Kiefer Sutherland's latest foray into the horror genre, Mirrors , scored the bronze in the box office fight between Ghost Town and Rocknrolla .

That scared up enough cash to take it in at Number 4.

Show of Hands starring Melanie Lynskey ( Two and a Half Men ) and Craig Hall (Outrageous Fortune) just made it into the Top 10 clocking in at number 9, despite its recent high profile red carpet launch in Taranaki .

It's a fairly quiet week for releases this coming week with arthouse films making up the majority of the releases - Caramel and The Savages have both recently been part of the International Film Festival which toured New Zealand.

The big mainstream release is Kate Hudson's latest comedy My Best Friend's Girl.

But Bond's latest outing Quantum of Solace is due in 2 weeks - and despite some mixed reviews, the public's voted by putting their bums on the cinema seats - it's done massively well in the UK and US box office - and you'd be a fool to bet against Daniel Craig's Bond not doing the same in New Zealand.

And yes, Mamma Mia's finally out of the Top 20....but for how long?
