National leader John Key is standing by his Manukau East candidate, accused of being involved in an immigration scandal.

Kanwaljit Bakshi is alleged to have made a fake job offer to an Indian woman who was trying to get residency in New Zealand.

Key says he is confident Bakshi hasn't been involved in anything shonky.

He says as long as Bakshi has given the National Party assurances he has not been involved in any scam, he accepts his candidate's word.

Key admits he has not yet spoken to Bakshi about the matter.

An alleged victim of the false job offer told ONE News on Saturday that they felt cheated by the immigration consultant and Bakshi in their failed immigration bid.

Bakshi says he never received any money but admits making a job offer. However, he says he did so in good faith in order to expand his importing business.
