Barack Obama's lead in the polls is diminishing according to some, but he is attracting support from all over the world, including New Zealand.

One supporter is even there in the midst of the US build-up, campaigning hard on his behalf, and standing out among the American accents touting for Obama and the Democrats in a New York phone bank.

Helen Klisser During has brought her Kiwi vowels, and some political conviction to the debate, even though she cannot vote in the US election.

An American taxpayer and resident for almost 20 years, but not a citizen, she came armed with a cellphone and a charger (the script was provided).

"The hotel was donated." she explains. "People come with their own phone minutes and we all make around 90 calls in two hours."

Obama truly has an international following. One British campaigner, Victoria Barr paid for her own ticket to be here, coming from Oxford to Virginia to work on Obama's drive.

The excitement is hard to miss among other volunteers. "Truly a moment of change is needed, not just for America, but the world," Klisser During states emphatically.

Klisser During is one of hundreds hitting the phones for Obama in NYC alone. On Sunday, they were hoping to make more than 30,000 calls to voters in swing states.

Does her accent cause any misunderstandings? "Sometimes I have to repeat things twice, but that's okay, and nobody's saying 'What are you doing, calling for Obama?' There's no foreigners in America I think, the America that I know."

With Obama's lead in the polls tightening a little, she is hoping American voters have no hang-ups about a little outside encouragement.
