Helen Clark took to the dance floor as she released Labour's health policy at a Tongan community event in East Auckland.

She was mobbed by supporters after speaking to several hundred people gathered at a basketball stadium.

As the band played, the Prime Minister, dressed in red and with a colourful lei, took to her feet and danced with dozens of fans, to much applause and cheers.

Afterwards, Clark talked about the importance of healthy eating and exercise.

She said Labour would continue to target waiting lists and staffing shortages, and will make doctor visits cheaper once economic conditions permit.

Clark said her party plans to make fighting obesity and diseases caused by smoking and drinking a priority.

She said 100 more doctors would be trained by 2011 and Labour would also look at reducing the cost of doctor visits further, focusing on the over 65s and those aged between six and 17.

Labour wants to strengthen regulation of the aged care sector and give intellectually disabled people with high support needs free annual health checks.

There was no indication of how much the party's health policy will cost.
