The Labour Party has released its health policy, vowing to continue working on the achievements of the last nine years.

Labour leader Helen Clark announced the details at a Tongan community event in east Auckland.

Clark says Labour's priority for the health system will be to fight obesity as well as the diseases caused by tobacco and alcohol.

She says as soon as economic circumstances permit, Labour will look at reducing the cost of doctors' visits further, focusing on over 65s and those aged between six and 17.

The policy, which has no costings attached, also sets out Labour's plans to target waiting lists.

It also proposes establishing a one-stop-shop for primary health care in rural areas, and addressing staffing issues in maternity care and the aged care sector.
