The Government says it will not lower a tax on fortified wines.

The wine industry asked the Government to review the 87% higher excise duty imposed earlier this year because the extra cost caused sales of port and sherry to plummet.

But Associate Health Minister, Jim Anderton, says the tax on fortified wines will stay as part of its campaign against the sale of cheap, high-alcohol content liquor.

Anderton says he does not buy the argument that it will cause the ruin of fortified wine producers.

He says that part of the wine industry has already been in decline for some time.
