Kiwi swimming sensation Sophie Pascoe looks likely to add to her
medal haul after a world record-breaking swim in her S10 backstroke
heat on Saturday afternoon.
Swimming in the second heat of the 100 metres, Sophie hit at wall
in one minute, 11 point 26 seconds and broke the previous word
record of 1:12.25, set by American Rutherford at the Athens
Games.
Shireen Saphiro of South Africa qualified in the second fastest time but was nearly two seconds behind the Kiwi.
With two cycling bronze medals on Friday, women have now won eight of New Zealand's nine medals at the Paralympics and this total looks likely to increase when Sophie hits the Water Cube for her final just after ten-thirty on Saturday night.
Also in the pool, Daniel Sharp has qualified fourth fastest overall in the SB13 100m breaststroke.
Ranked number two in the world with his best time of one minute
nine point two seconds, Sharp had hoped to swim a little faster on
Saturday morning even though he qualified easily in 1:10.81.
He will start from lane six in his final on Saturday night.
Meanwhile in cycling, Annemarie Donaldson has finished in 11th
position in the gruelling 36.3km road race, won by Germany's Andrea
Eskau.
The women's HC A/HC B/HC C category event was the last
appearance for Donaldson at her first Paralympic Games.
