Toll roads could become a reality if National gets into power.
The party's transport spokesman Maurice Williamson told the TV ONE's Agenda programme that National would look at introducing a toll of around $3-5 a trip for a number of new roading projects.
Williamson says tolls would only be placed on new roads if it was going to ease congestion
He has also revealed plans to charge tolls for users of major road building projects, but says he does not see their use as being widespread.
Williamson insists they would be restricted to only a handful of major projects, such as Auckland's Waterview motorway and Wellington's Transmission Gully.
National's transport spokesman says commuters would not mind paying up to $50 a week for better roads.
But the Prime Minister does not agree.
She says it's a classic case of National giving with one hand and taking away with the other.
Clark says people are being promised another $50 a week in tax cuts on top of what Labour's offering.
And she says Williamson wants to spend it all for them, getting to and from work every day.
Finance Minister Michael Cullen has further accused National of
having an agenda to introduce user charges for schools and
hospitals, tolls for roads, and increase Government debt so it can
pay for its tax cuts policy.
