The National Ethics Advisory Committee wants more information before it can rule on the way the surgery booking system is operating.

This follows a letter from Christchurch surgeons raising concerns about the ethics of the system which recently removed more than 10,000 people from the local hospital waiting lists.

The chairman of the committee, Dr Andrew Moore, says legal and ethical issues were robustly considered when the policy was developed nationally in the mid-nineteen nineties. But he says the committee wants more information about how it operates now.

Moore says the surgeons will be advised through a letter to the Canterbury regional ethics committee on Monday.
