A nationwide audit into how hospitals manage patients with acute heart problems shows that some treatments are falling short of accepted best practice.

The audit is the first to be completed, and includes data from all 36 hospitals around the country which admit patients suffering from either heart attacks or unstable angina.

The audit was completed over two weeks in May, when care given to 930 patients was monitored and later assessed.

Audit Group Chairman Chris Ellis says the group will now look to work with the authorities to try to improve the structure and delivery of service.

He says the use of investigative techniques such as heart scans and exercise tests to assess patients' conditions was lower than recommended in Australasian guidelines.
