New Zealand's largest hospital is planning to get tough with heart patients who put off their operations for business and personal reasons.

Auckland District Health Board says if patients choose to cancel for non-medical reasons a second time, they will be taken off the waiting list and referred back to their GP.

Chief operating officer Marek Stephniack says they recently looked at patients who waited more than six months for cardiac surgery.

They found seven out of 23 had cancelled operations for a variety of non-medical reasons such as business and study commitments.
