Kiwis eager to be the first in the world to buy Apple's new-generation iPhone have begun queuing up in freezing temperatures.

Four people with deck chairs, sleeping bags and a small tent started queueing on Tuesday night outside an Vodafone Auckland shop.

Vodafone, will start selling the much-hyped and keenly sought 3G iPhone at 9am Friday, the first in the world, from three of its shops.

Student Jonny Gladwell, 22, said he was in the queue because his friends had bet him he could not last the distance. If he lasts, they will buy him the phone. In the meantime they are bringing him meals and holding his place in the queue when he needs a toilet break.

Vodafone is selling the phone for $199 if consumers sign up for a two-year contract.

The iPhone 250MB plan will cost $80 a month, the 500MB plan will cost $130 and the 1GB plan will cost $250. The plans all include 600 texts and between 120 and 600 minutes of voice calls. There will be an additional cost per MB of 10cents for the 250 and 500 MB plan and 3 cents for the 1GB plan.

Demand for pricing details was so heavy it crashed Vodafone's New Zealand website on Tuesday.

What do you think about the iPhone pricing plan?
