The government is investigating the question of access across private land to waterways and other public areas, as well as sites of environmental significance.

The Land Access Review group - set up by the Minister of Rural Affairs - will be hearing some of the 200 submissions from groups and individuals who have registered their concerns.

The access issue has raised the hackles of both farmers and outdoor sport and recreation groups.

But John Acland, who heads the review group, says the response from the public has been heartening.

He says a number of submissions complained that right of access to certain waterways and beaches had been taken away from them. On the other hand farmers were concerned that some members of the public do not have regard for private land.

He says the reference group will be reporting back to the minister of rural affairs at the end of July.

Rural minister Jim Sutton has said there may be law changes as a result of the review.
